English muffins are not really muffins: the yeast batter is cooked on a griddle, making these “muffins” a type of Americanized crumpet, a cross between a pancake and a flatbread. Rings like these give English muffins their characteristic shape. They are often preheated with the griddle, then batter is spooned into them and the muffins are cooked on one side before the rings are removed and the muffins flipped over to finish cooking. Packaged four to a box, the rings can also be used to make perfectly round pancakes and sunny-side up eggs, or they can double as biscuit cutters.
